Digital Storytelling, Transmedia And Participatory Culture With Gunther Sonnenfeld

Episode #220 of Six Pixels of Separation – The Twist Image Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.

On my last trip to Europe, I had the pleasure of speaking in Oslo, Norway at The Golden Tag (Gulltaggen) conference, which featured Richard Branson, Guy Kawasaki, Gary Vaynerchuk and many more. Speaking right before me was Gunther Sonnenfeld (SVP, Director of Experience & Applied Technology at RAPP) on the topics of Transmedia, participatory culture and Digital Storytelling. Gunther’s perspective on how brands can really connect and flourish struck me in a deep and meaningful way. Along with becoming fast friends, we agreed to have a conversation about the topics and discuss how much the world of Marketing and Advertising has changed in the past few years. Here is our discussion. Enjoy the conversation…

  1. Hi, I found the podcasts very insightful. my name is Mark Shaw, I’m a 4th year graphic design student studying at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology in, Ireland. I am currently researching the topic of convergence culture and looking specifically at transmedia and its increasing role in marketing strategies and how these new approaches are both produced by practitioners and experienced by the consumer as a participator. I would be very grateful for any insight into your opinions or experiences on these few points or the topic in general.
Do you feel there are any negatives or pitfalls to be avoided in the current trend towards convergence?
In a marketing context, do you think the notion of a participatory culture will weaken or even replace the role of design professionals with the rise in trends such as crowdsourcing, inviting consumer participation at the creative stage?
    Thank you.
