Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, Pandemonio, and ResolveTO, Author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (PressBooks, LibriVox, iambik and co-author of Book: A Futurist’s Manifesto) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see”.
Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:
- How Silicon Valley Became a Den of Spies – Politico. “I love a good spy story. This one is pretty topical. A valley built on Open Source, awash with accusations of infiltration. Gregarious interaction and fast turnover, along with the sometimes doe-eyed optimism of techno-utopians, has made it a prime target for spies. But I didn’t realize just how porous the Bay Area was until I read this.” (Alistair for Hugh).
- Want Less-Biased Decisions? Use Algorithms – Harvard Business Review. “There is a ton of algorithmic bias in the world. And plenty of books have warned against it. But are we comparing algorithms to perfection, or to the incredibly flawed brains of humans? In many cases, algorithms are less biased than humans–an argument we seldom hear enough about.” (Alistair for Mitch).
- Behemoth, bully, thief: how the English language is taking over the planet – The Guardian. “English is ‘the hypercentral language that holds the entire world language system together'” and is overwhelming (and extinguishing) other languages at an astonishing rate.” (Hugh for Alistair).
- These human face pies are the stuff of nightmares ?? – IEK TUB – YouTube. “Mmm yummm!” (Hugh for Mitch).
- Podcasting’s Next Frontier: A Manifesto For Growth – Tom Webster – Medium. “My love of podcasting goes back over thirteen years. In those early days (when it was more like pirate radio), I met Tom Webster. He’s done wonders for the podcasting and digital audio space, and he continues to be a beacon of insight and data for just how quickly (over a lot of time?), podcasting is changing. Here is 4000 fresh words about the opportunity in podcasting that lies ahead. If you’re into audio… take a read… then please go and listen to some podcasts!” (Mitch for Alistair).
- Tsundoku: The art of buying books and never reading them – BBC News. “Good to know that there’s a name for this disease that I have. Granted, I read more than the average bear, but I still buy a ton… and those printed words do not get read. At least not yet?” (Mitch for Hugh).
