Welcome to episode #296 of Six Pixels Of Separation – The Twist Image Podcast. I picked up the business book, The Art of the Pitch – Persuasion and Presentation Skills That Win Business, by Peter Coughter and could not put it down. My agency, Twist Image, was in the midst of a massive new business pitch and the book happened to fall into my lap at the perfect time. I devoured and loved the book. I learned a ton about the new business pitch process, and Coughter does a fantastic job of reframing what, exactly, needs to happen when a company pitches. The good news is that we won the business. The better news is that Coughter agreed to have a chat with me about his book and how to win new business. For over twenty years, Coughter was President of Siddall, Matus & Coughter Inc., one of the most respected advertising and communications agencies in the Southeast. His agency won industry awards and recognition from places like the American Marketing Association, One Show, Clios, Communications Arts, and many others. Today, he is a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Brandcenter, and to support his teaching habit, he spends a lot of time on the road working with organizations – from all walks of life – helping them to learn how to sell their ideas better. Enjoy the conversation…

First and foremost, thank you. I have loved this interview… for many reasons.
Informative, entertaining but mostly transformative because it comes at a good time for me… Pitching an idea in the industry of advertising can apply to selling yourself in a job interview. I’m comforted in my belief of being authentic, ‘risky’ and wanting to win!
I will read Peter’s book and glean even more insights into the art of presentation.
This podcast is a pearl.
Innumerable! Just innumerable.
The value; the take aways from SPOS #296 are so innumerable “it’s like trying to smoke crack and go to sleep”, to quote Eminem.
No. I don’t mess with that stuff, smoke or inhale. But staying on point, we’re on different time zones and I’ve been stopping, replaying, and jotting down notes from the above Podcast for hours now! Multitasking is not the reason. Only doing one other thing (shhh. don’t tell). But it’s really that good! 25mins to go. Don’t be surprised if I finish in 2013.
Thanks enormously, Mitch.
And Peter…Hats off to you and happy belated birthday. Mine was last week. So, I guess I’m another right brainer too:-)
Mitch, I finally had a chance to listen to this wonderful interview. Thanks so much for sharing it. I have bought Peter Coughter’s book and can’t wait to read it. Although I’m not in the advertising world, I know I can learn a lot from his experiences. There were so many points during the podcast where I was nodding my head in agreement. The other people at the Y were probably wondering what I was listening to on my iPod!
