Cyber Monday… Don't Get Killed (Online)

Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio broadcasting out of Montreal (home base). It’s not a long segment – about 5 to 10 minutes every week – about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly to SoundCloud, if you’re interested in hearing more of me blathering away. I’m really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up on listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry and Heather B. morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.

This week we discussed:

  • BlackBerry thinks that their new device, Passport, is so good that you just have to try it. How badly do they believe it? They’re willing to pay you (some call it a bribe) to switch to it. Smart move? Great device? Maybe, it’s just a nice little PR stunt to keep their name out there. What do you think?
  • Last Friday was Black Friday. When the retail specials start rolling, and people ditch out early from their Thanksgivings celebrations in the US to get in line and start a riot to get a Xbox for fifty bucks less than usual. Don’t believe me? Watch all of the people getting trampled on YouTube… it’s scary and dangerous! Want in on a little secret? The e-commerce players didn’t want to be left out, so today is Cyber Monday! Yes, check out all of your favourite online players today for special deals. Plus, Cyber Monday is becoming a bigger deal than Black Friday, if you ask some people.
  • If you own a business, one of the biggest complaints we still hear is that employees are wasting too much time on YouTube and Facebook. Some companies still block Facebook or don’t allow it at work. So, Facebook has an idea! They’re going to launch Facebook At Work! So, we used to not want our managers to see what we’re posting on Facebook. Now, it looks like Facebook feels like they can compete with LinkedIn. Will businesses want this? What about IT people? A lot of IT departments might not want this type of business content in the hands of Facebook due to security issues and legal compliance.
  • App of the week – ia Writer Pro.
