Who is Janek Gwizdala?
When I started preparing for my conversation with Janek Gwizdala, it became abundantly clear why he is such a popular bass player, teacher, and YouTuber. I found myself completely immersed in a fifteen minute long YouTube video about why he has his action so high on the bass. And, yes, it really was captivating. Janek started playing music at eleven years old, with classical guitar lessons. He moved to the drums before discovering the bass (and when he did make the discovery, he was all in). Through a series of interesting gigs and meeting other fellow musicians, he moved from the UK to Los Angeles and then on to study at Berklee in Boston. After three semesters at Berklee, Janek moved to New York City, where he landed several high-profile gigs, the next eight years would include tours, record dates, production, musical direction, and performances with Jive Jones, Jem, Wayne Krantz, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Paul Shaffer, Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller and many more. He loves creating vlogs for YouTube and helping bass players get better. Enjoy the conversation…

What is Groove – The No Treble Podcast?
This is an ambitious effort. This will be a fascinating conversation. Our goal at Groove is to build the largest oral history of bass players. Why Groove? Most of the content about the bass revolves around gear, playing techniques, and more technical chatter. For us, bassists are creative artists with stories to tell. They are a force to be reckon with. These are the stories and conversation that we will capture. To create this oral history of why these artists chose the bass, what their creative lives are like, and where inspiration can be found.
