I’ve become a big fan of the webinar. I think it’s a powerful way to take an hour and get some great learning skills. Microsoft Office Live Meeting has been running these complimentary web seminars for some time and although some do have a sales pitch to them, others have been full of killer content.
On March 23rd, 2006, they are offering up How To Prevent PowerPoint Overload featuring Cliff Atkinson (Author & Speaker, Sociable Media). Atkinson wrote the book, Beyond Bullet Points, and consults top lawyers and Fortune 500 people on how to create a memorable presentation.
Here’s how the website describes How To Prevent PowerPoint Overload:
“Aligning your multimedia message with the way the mind works. When the lights go down and a presenter starts reading bullet points from a slide, do you ever feel bored, frustrated, or sleepy? If so, there’s research that indicates that it’s probably not your fault. It turns out that the conventional bullet-point approach can quickly overload the ability of the human mind to understand information. But now there’s a better way. By understanding the basic research that explains how the mind works, you can radically transform your PowerPoint approach to produce simpler and clearer communications. By the end of the seminar, you’ll have the concepts and tools you need to start presenting more clearly and effectively!
In this seminar you will learn how to:
– Respect the limitations of short-term memory.
– Use Notes Page view to balance visual and verbal elements.
– Use visual cues to reinforce for both you and the audience the most important points.”
I think we’ve all seen our fair share of PowerPoint gone wrong.
