Who is Sharay Reed?
What first caught my attention was his book, Be There – A Book of Bass. Sharay Reed has also authored, Bass Lines. So, he’s more than an incredible bass player. He is a writer and entrepreneur and the city of Chicago must be proud of what their citizen has done to bring musical joy to the world. Sharay is a proficient player on the upright, electric, and synth bass and reads music fluently. He has performed in the bands of Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams, the controversial R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and many others. Sharay graduated from DePaul University in Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and a Master’s Degree (with Distinction) in Composition. He currently plays bass with keyboardist Cory Henry, and does freelance bass playing for a wide variety of artists and projects. His life continues to be a fascinating journey. Enjoy the conversation…

What is Groove – The No Treble Podcast?
This is an ambitious effort. This will be a fascinating conversation. Our goal at Groove is to build the largest oral history of bass players. Why Groove? Most of the content about the bass revolves around gear, playing techniques, and more technical chatter. For us, bassists are creative artists with stories to tell. They are a force to be reckon with. These are the stories and conversation that we will capture. To create this oral history of why these artists chose the bass, what their creative lives are like, and where inspiration can be found.
