Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #431

Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?

My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for InterestingTilt the WindmillHBS, chair of StrataStartupfestPandemonio, and ResolveTO, Author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (PressBooks, LibriVox, iambik and co-author of Book: A Futurist’s Manifesto) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see”.

Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:

  • Everything You Know About Obesity Is Wrong – Huffington Post. “This longform piece is an eye-opener. Just as we’re rethinking the health of sugars and fats, and learning about longevity through new insights into genetics, so we’ll reconsider obesity. As the article points out, we knew how to cure scurvy for decades before we actually did anything; the myths around obesity are just as bad. ‘Unfit skinny people were twice as likely to get diabetes as fit fat people,’ says one study, and ’89 percent of obese adults had been bullied by their romantic partners.’ Worth a read.” (Alistair for Hugh).
  • Weird Side Projects. “I have fifty things I want to do. Most of my anxiety comes from knowing that many of those crazy ideas will die with me, unaccomplished and unarticulated. And yes, that is the height of hubris, but also the essence of humanity. It should explain why this site makes me so happy.” (Alistair for Mitch).
  • How the Enlightenment Ends – The Atlantic. “If Amazon doesn’t get you (see below), AI will.” (Hugh for Alistair).
  • Making Sense of Amazon’s Alexa Spaghetti Strategy – Bloomberg. “Amazon is coming to get you.” (Hugh for Mitch).
  • Network effect: How Shopify is the platform powering the DTC brand revolution – Digiday. “I am full-on into the world of direct to consumer brands. Fascinating to watch how these companies leverage a purpose, technology, data and engagement to rocket past the incumbent brands. My friends at Shopify are on to something (no kidding, have you seen their stock and growth?). They are helping to propel these brands. They are also helping to push legacy brands into this space. Things are super exciting for brands and retail… when it comes to the direct to consumer play.” (Mitch for Alistair).
  • The quiet revolution in business book publishing – The Bookseller. “Authors are no longer people who write books. They are brands, consultants and speakers who see riches in growing their business/brand by having a book published. The market is speaking. That doesn’t mean that being an author is dead and gone. It just means that many people who have bestselling books (or are making real coin by writing a book) aren’t ‘authors’ as we have known them to be.” (Mitch for Hugh).

Feel free to share these links and add your picks on TwitterFacebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.
