Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #445

Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?

My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, FWD50, and Scaletechconf; author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (Rebus Foundation, PressBooks, LibriVox) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see.”

Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:

  • Script To Screen – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) – Twitter. “I don’t usually share Twitter accounts or threads here. But this one is worth looking at: They take the footage from a movie and overlay it with the script. It’s fascinating to see how the director turned screen direction and dialogue into a scene. In this particular one, a long shot shows us all we need to know about the character with amazing economy of words. Most of their tweets are equally fascinating.” (Alistair for Hugh).
  • 2018 – The Reuters Graphics Department Takes A Look Back At A Year’s Worth of Work – Reuters. “A picture is worth a thousand words. And in an era of interactive media, visualizations are compelling ways to convey a lot of data. I’m a sucker for a great graphic, and these are some of the best.” (Alistair for Mitch).
  • Billy the GOAT – Twitter. “A good soundtrack for your and my upcoming 2019.” (Hugh for Alistair).
  • Watch man use Japanese knife to make paper-thin cuts of vegetables – Boing Boing. “I like cooking. I like good sharp knives to cook with. Here’s hoping we call cut through our problems this smoothly in 2019.” (Hugh for Mitch).
  • Forbes is building more AI tools for its reporters – DigiDay. “One of the core jobs that a journalist has is having a ’nose for news.’ Sussing out a good story or figuring out the right angle. The writing is – as we say in the business – often the easy part. Now, these AI tools are helping reporters figure out what to write? AI will know better than a journalist what makes a good story? Or, will AI simply know which types of stories get the most clicks? I’m ready to argue that these are not at all the same thing. I don’t like this… not one bit.” (Mitch for Alistair).
  • The Room of Requirement – This American Life. “Hugh and I both have a passion for books. With that comes a passion for libraries. These spaces have long been about much more than a place to borrow books from. Too many people think that libraries are from our past and have no value in the present. May I present ‘exhibit a’ – a bunch of stories about what really happens in libraries and how powerful (and important) they are (and will always be) in our society. I especially love the segment in this episode about the library that’s on the border of Canada and the United States. ‘…literally on the border, with part of the library in each country.’ It’s awesome and beautiful, and tells the story about how it has recently become a critical space for a surprising set of visitors.” (Mitch for Hugh).

Feel free to share these links and add your picks on TwitterFacebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.
