Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, FWD50, and Scaletechconf; author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (Rebus Foundation, PressBooks, LibriVox) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see.”
Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:
- An open letter to @Facebook, @Twitter, @Instagram and @Experian regarding algorithms and my son’s birth – Gillian Brockell – Twitter. “In an update on Twitter, Washington Post reporter Gillian Brockell wrote about the harrowing experience of target marketing, the loss of a child, and the digital era. Then she tried to get Experian to remove the information from her personal records. If you want a case study of just how impossibly difficult it is to control your online dopelganger, look no further than this thread.” (Alistair for Hugh).
- Inside the Rise of the ASMR Commercial – Vulture. “We live in headphones much of the time. It’s gone unmentioned by many, but much of the world got a huge audio upgrade in the last decade with the arrival of smartphones and notebook computers, co-working spaces and coffee-shop offices. We notice sound more, and have the tools to get it better. And hyper-clear sensory audio is nothing new to Youtubers. But when it hits the superbowl, you know it’s mainstream.” (Alistair for Mitch).
- You Might Be a Robot. This Is Not a Joke – Bloomberg. “In the eyes of the law, at least.” (Hugh for Alistair).
- Golden age of the grift – The Times Literary Supplement. “We hate ’em, but we love them too.” (Hugh for Mitch).
- Scientists ‘Reverse Time’ With Quantum Computer In Breakthrough Study – Independent. “I don’t know. If I was the publisher of any major media outlet, this would be the front page, top of fold headline for like a whole week. Time travel! Time travel! We’re going back to the future! OK, maybe it’s not quite there yet, but this is one of those fascinating discoveries that is not getting enough attention… and it deserves it. Science is going to bring forth some of the most incredible innovations once quantum computing really kicks in. This story is a mind bender. Incredible.” (Mitch for Alistair).
- The Drummer Hal Blaine Provided The Beat For American Music – The New Yorker. “Sure, my true passion is bass players (and how ignored their stories are in the history of music). Drummers don’t catch much of a break, either. Every drummer joke is about how dumb they are. Other musicians often frown on those who drum simply keep time by banging skins, but there is so much more there to admire. If you’re looking for names, there are plenty. Hal Blaine was one of them (to those who love the drums, but not to the mainstream). He just passed (90 years old!). Read this article. Imagine that. One drummer playing for all of those bands on all of those songs that we all love. What a life well lived… and well played. RIP Hal!” (Mitch for Hugh).
