Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #601

Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?

My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, Interesting Bits, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, FWD50, and Scaletechconf; author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (Rebus Foundation, PressBooks, LibriVox) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see.”

Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:

  • A bleak outlook for public sector tech – Sean BootsSean Boots is a Canadian hero. An early part of the Canadian Digital Service that has moved Canada ahead – significantly – in how it delivers digital services, he’s also a clear writer unafraid to speak hard truths. This article explains exactly why we can’t have nice things, not just in Canada, but abroad. Anyone who cares about modernizing government needs to start by reading this, and sharing it with everyone they know.” (Alistair for Hugh).
  • Slaughterbots – if human: kill() – Future of Life Institute. “This might seem like a downer for the New Year. On November 30th, New Zealand called for a ban on autonomous killer robots — those that use algorithms to target their victims without human control. Wars are won asymmetrically, and it’s unlikely we’ll be able to prevent those who don’t care about regulations from building dangerous machines. You should be worried about this much more than you are; the Future of Life Institute put together this nightmarish video that shows what such things might look like. Oh, and most major countries with sizeable militaries rejected New Zealand’s call for a ban. Have we not watched enough science fiction yet?” (Alistair for Mitch).
  • Helen De La Rosa & Munir Hossn – Scott’s Bass Lessons. “You like drum and bass music? That’s what this is, right?” (Hugh for Alistair).
  • The Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time – Guitar Player. “Among other things I learned via this article: When Pete Townsend was asked to play the solo in Michael Jackson‘s ‘Beat It’, he declined, but suggested Eddie Van Halen, who said ‘yes’.” (Hugh for Mitch).
  • The Beat’s 24 Best Comics of 2021 – The Beat. “Let me repeat myself: I am a comic book nerd. If you’ve never read comic books, and believe that they’re just superheroes in tights, wow are you missing out on a huge part of literature, art and culture. Here’s a list of some of the best comic books that came out this year – many of which are a part of my collection. If you want superheroes, sure… here are some. If you’re looking for something really different, check out titles like The Department of Truth, The Good Asian and a few that are not on the list like the Reckless series by Ed Brubaker, Cherry Blackbird, Mazebook and/or hit me up for some other great titles. Happy reading!” (Mitch for Alistair).
  • Old Book Illustrations. “I like free stock photography. I like books. I like illustrations (especially from older publications). So… here ya go! A great search engine for images with a particular slant towards Victorian and French Romantic Illustrations. So much goodness is here… just play around and enjoy… a great find!” (Mitch for Hugh).
