Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #702

Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?

My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, Interesting Bits, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, FWD50, and Scaletechconf; author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (Rebus Foundation, PressBooks, LibriVox) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see.”

Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:

  • The Neurologist Who Hacked His Brain—And Almost Lost His Mind – Wired. “This 2016 piece from Wired shows the very real limits of technology. We talk about brain implants as if they’re simple, because we see them in science fiction. But the reality is that human-machine interfaces are complicated, and biology is an incredibly delicate system. Here’s the tale of a doctor who decided to experiment on himself — and his rocky road to recovery.” (Alistair for Hugh).
  • How To Coup Any Country – Ordinary Guide – YouTube. “‘t couldn’t happen here’ stops most people from thinking about how easily a democracy can become a dictatorship. But it’s happened plenty of times in the past — in fact, up until the early twentieth century, it was the norm. When politicians vow to be ‘a dictator, but just for a day,’ our alarm bells should be ringing. Ordinary Guide reminds us just how quickly things can change.” (Alistair for Mitch).
  • Canada Is In Economic Decay. Prepare For Boc Rate Cuts And Big Returns In This Asset Class – The Globe And MailDavid Rosenberg on the growing shitshow of Canadian economic performance. For a country as rich in the things the world wants (energy, food, and well-educated people), Canadian economic underperformance is deeply troubling. We are 14th out of the G20 countries in GDP growth projections in 2024-2025, and 20th in OECD countries in productivity.”  (Hugh for Alistair).
  • Canada In Deep Economic Trouble – Financial PostDiane Francis on the growing shitshow of Canadian economic performance. For a country as rich in the things the world wants (energy, food, and well-educated people), Canadian economic underperformance is deeply troubling. We are 14th out of the G20 countries in GDP growth projections in 2024-2025, and 20th in OECD countries in productivity.”  (Hugh for Mitch).
  • Life Really Is Better Without The Internet – The Atlantic”I believe this: It’s getting harder and harder to read without your own values and judgement slathering all over the words of someone else. At first blush, the headline alone is enough to pull my back out from the hard eye-rolls I would normally make. What did I really get out of this article? One, I would never remove the wifi from my house, but kudos to those that do. Two, we are all looking for a place to go that isn’t connected… where we can’t be reached… where everything that is stored in the cloud isn’t right there for the taking (or the scrolling through). We strive for simpler times and forget that in those days that have passed, the people back then also wanted things to be simpler… Times are always complex. How we deal with it? How do we move through it? How do we evolve? How do we find true connection? That is the struggle… but it’s nothing new because you can scroll TikTok now.” (Mitch for Alistair).
  • Guy From The Audience Plays Drums With Foo Fighters. Pola Croatia 19-06-2019 – Alberto Cervellin – YouTube. “I don’t know about you, but I need more light, love, peace and music in my life. Live shows are, truly, my oxygen. I’ll often go to concerts alone… just happy to be there… with the crowd… and the artists… in communion. That is (and has always been) the place that gets me closest to anything I could define as ‘religion’. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters (whether you like the band or not) have a knack for making every show both spectacular and intimate. We’ve seen these videos before… a member of the audience is pulled up on stage and can actually ‘hang with the band’ during a jam… this is one them… but it hits a little bit different. Take a look… it’s balm for the soul.” (Mitch for Hugh).
