Technology For Better Health And More On CHOM 97.7 FM

Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It’s not a long segment – about 10 minutes every week – about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you’re interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what’s going on in the digital world. I’m really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry DiMonte morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.

This week we discussed:

  • Apps can help people’s health on many levels. If you’ve ever had a loved one in surgery, you know how long and painful the wait can be. There’s an app for that. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that startups (and even large health-care companies) are developing tools to give parents frequent updates on how a procedure is going. See, technology can do a lot of good!
  • More from Back to the Future. French inventor Franky Zapata has officially crossed the English Channel by hoverboard. On August 4, weeks after a failed Bastille Day flight, Zapata hopped on his jet-powered hoverboard that he invented, called the Flyboard Air, and set out to fly across the 35-kilometer channel. This time, he was successful. I had the pleasure of watching him do some “tests” at the TED conference last year.
  • Viral videos still work. Consider this: Nathan Patterson, 23, attended a Colorado Rockies game with his brother on July 15. He threw a pitch that clocked in at 96 miles per hour during a stadium speed challenge. He posted it to Twitter, and his pitch went viral. Two weeks later, he was signed to a team as a Major League Baseball player.
  • App of the Week: Standard eBooks.
