Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It’s not a long segment – about 10 minutes every week – about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you’re interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what’s going on in the digital world. I’m really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry DiMonte morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.
This week we discussed:
- Travis Kalanick is back at it. The disgraced co-founder of Uber made news last week when the Saudi’s sovereign wealth fund put $400 million into his new startup, CloudKitchens. That makes his new business already worth about $5 billion. What a world we live in.
- I got my flu shot. Did you? The Weather Channel app just teamed up with IBM‘s artificial intelligence engine, Watson, to provide a 15-day flu forecast that will include notifications for moments like confirmed outbreaks or high-peak moments. Smart!
- I did a search on Waze (owned by Google), then – in real-time – an ad appeared for the business I searched for directions to on my Facebook feed. How does that happen? Two of the biggest tech competitors swapping data and generating ad creative in real time? It’s all a little overwhelming – even for me. With that, maybe Jimmy Wales (co-founder of Wikipedia) is on to something with his latest project, WT:Social. A new social network to share articles and information. No algorithms. No advertising (it will be funded by donations).
- App of the Week: Tapmedical.
