Regarding Bing — I think you guys got down the wrong path on this one, when you tried to find a way that Bing was better than Google in terms of search results or the user experience.
If you’re Microsoft, being better than Google is not anywhere near the point. The Point is that Google is making a ton of money from Adwords and Microsoft wants a piece of the advertising action.
My bet is this has nothing to do with search and everything to do with building an audience to advertise to.
And rather than getting the early adopters to promote Bing to their mass market friends, they go direct to the mass with $100M+ in TV ads and build the audience the old fashioned way. (or if that doesn’t work do a Windows Update that changes your IE defaults to point to Bing)
It’s not sexy or trendy or perhaps even effective, but it fits their profile.
I’d be really interested in your reviews of Microsoft’s BingWords advertising platform once it’s announced. 🙂
